Having a Facebook group for a course is a double edged sword in many ways, while it may provide a useful platform in which to update students of any goings on it’s also the primary social media many of us use to message friends and share various posts with each other which can make for a very distracting experience. Personally our course had a Facebook page for 3 years and while it started out well and organised towards the end it became more and more cluttered and harder to find real information from staff, this combined with the very real risk of being distracted by the enticing messaging system made for a fairly poor tool to use overall and we ended up swapping to Google Classroom towards the end of the year. Depending on the class Facebook could be a perfect solution to sending out updates to students however in many cases I feel that Google Classroom may be a better and more organised alternative. |
